Rail User Group Welcomes Stratford-upon-Avon to Honeybourne Railway Line Decision by Stratford on Avon District Council

Following the Cabinet Meeting of Stratford on Avon District Council on Monday 10 March 2025, Peter Morris, Chair of the Shakespeare Line Rail User Group said:

“The Shakespeare Line Rail User Group (SLRUG) is pleased and appreciates Stratford-on-Avon District Council Cabinet’s formal recognition of the Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC) for reopening the railway line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Honeybourne.

This pivotal step represents a careful and considered approach to potentially enhancing our region’s transport connectivity and we believe is grounded in the interests of the public and regional development.” “We would also welcome the fresh approach being taken by the Liberal Democrat administration now leading Stratford on Avon District Council. Their commitment to assessing transport options with an open mind aligns closely with our vision of a more connected and accessible community. We believe this progressive leadership is crucial for fostering dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders.”

“It is important to emphasise that SLRUG do not see this decision as a win nor a defeat for any group; instead, it is a collective decision motivated by common sense and the overarching goal of enhancing public transport services. We encourage open dialogue among all community members, particularly with those opposed to the railway reopening.”

“The decision to pursue a thorough exploration of the potential railway options should be embraced by all. We hope all stakeholders, including the Greenway Group, welcome the Council’s efforts to gather a comprehensive set of objective facts before reaching any final conclusions. A detailed analysis will ensure that all aspects—environmental, economic, and community—are considered transparently and with due diligence.”

“Cllr George Cowcher highlighted the significant challenges ahead, particularly concerning funding. It is imperative we work together as a united community to support the necessary studies and considerations that lie ahead. This is an opportunity to cultivate a more effective transport strategy for South Warwickshire, ultimately benefiting the entire region, including where there are areas of concern.” “The Shakespeare Line Rail User Group remains committed to advocating for informed decision-making that prioritises the well-being of our community.”

“We look forward to the continuation of this important dialogue as we seek the best outcomes for all residents.”
